How Can I Straighten Crooked Teeth Without Braces?

There is no question that traditional braces continue to offer an effective orthodontic solution for individuals across the age spectrum. With that in mind, it is important to note that, for many patients, braces are not the only solution. Both adolescents and adults now have a larger menu of options to choose from when it comes to treatments designed to improve teeth misalignment and bite irregularities. While some patients may have orthodontic conditions so severe that traditional braces are more capable of providing optimal results, the fact is that many others may be suitable for options that do not require brackets and wires to effectively straighten the teeth.

Here are a few treatments capable of serving as alternatives to traditional braces for the right candidate:

Invisalign® Clear Aligners

Clear aligner systems have become very popular orthodontic treatment methods. Cumberland Dental Associates offers Invisalign®, a highly successful brand of clear aligners that can be appropriate options for both adults and teenagers. The series of Invisalign® custom aligner trays are made of a strong, translucent plastic material and are designed to fit snugly over the teeth. Each aligner is worn for about two weeks before it is changed out for the next one in the series, allowing the teeth to gradually shift into the desired position over time. Invisalign® aligners are nearly invisible and can be removed while eating, drinking, and brushing. They are well-known for their discretion and ease-of-use, and can be helpful for mild to moderate orthodontic concerns.

Porcelain Veneers

In some cases, an ongoing orthodontic treatment utilizing braces or aligners may not be necessary. For individuals with mild to moderate misalignment, porcelain dental veneers may be an option worthy of consideration. Porcelain veneers are thin shells composed of a durable porcelain material custom-designed to fit over the front and sides of the teeth. These options do not physically move the teeth—they are tooth restorations that can conceal the appearance of misalignment and signs of “crooked” teeth to provide a straighter, more uniform smile. Porcelain veneers are known as “Instant Orthodontics” because it typically only takes a couple of appointments to achieve the final results. They may not be the best option for severe and complex orthodontic conditions; however, some patients may find that porcelain veneers are ideal for their ultimate goals.

Cosmetic Dental Bonding

Cosmetic dental bonding offers another relatively quick solution for patients with certain kinds of misalignment concerns. This process involves the application of a strong, tooth-colored resin to the teeth, which is then hardened and meticulously shaped to fill gaps and spaces. Dental bonding may be a good option for patients who have minor alignment issues. This treatment can often be completed in a single office visit.

Retainers

In some cases, a retainer may be all that’s necessary to straighten slightly misaligned teeth. Retainers are typically used after primary orthodontic treatment to help the teeth maintain their new position; however, sometimes they can be used all on their own to make minor adjustments.

The best treatment option for your needs will ultimately depend on the severity of misalignment and your personal preferences.
